Offset Inks

In offset printing, the inks employed on the press need to possess the capability to deliver the intended color and coverage to the paper effectively, despite the split-film action inherent in the process. This phenomenon arises as the offset blanket transfers only a fraction of the ink from the plate, which subsequently delivers only a portion of that to the paper. Consequently, the ink film reaching the plate is quite thin, necessitating the ink to exhibit its complete color and opacity with this thin layer.

Ink comprises three primary components: Pigment, providing coloration; Vehicle, a liquid medium holding pigment particles; and Modifiers, which regulate ink drying, odor, scuff resistance, and color longevity.

Offset printing inks utilize two primary types of pigment: organic and inorganic. Organic pigment, derived from carbon, is employed in the production of black ink. In contrast, colored inks utilize inorganic pigments, created through the amalgamation of diverse chemicals. For instance, ultramarine blue ink is crafted by blending sulfur, silica, or china clay with either soda ash or sulfate salts.
